Dominica: PM Skerrit asks residents to intensify the preparations against hurricanes

Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit has asked the country’s residents to intensify their preparations against the hurricanes as the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season is here.

Prime Minister Skerrit mentioned, “I extend warm greetings to all. As Dominica enters the 2022 Atlantic Hurricane Season, I urge you to intensify preparations to protect yourselves and your families and take precautionary measures to safeguard your homes, businesses, farms, livestock and other belongings.”

Hurricane season, this year, is predicted to be ‘above average’, and though we have been spared the impact of a major cyclone since the passage of Hurricane Maria in 2017, the government of Dominica should not let down its guard.

Furthermore, he shared some of the safety points, which are as follows:

• Prepare a family emergency and evacuation plan
• Build an emergency kit with essential supplies, including medicines
• Organize important documents and confirm coverage with your insurance provider (Take advantage of the income tax deduction for premiums paid on your home insurance up to $8000 for the income year 2022)
• Secure your homes-install shutters, clean gutters and drains, trim trees and shrubs

He also took a moment and stated about helping the vulnerable in the community, including the aged and disabled. He further asked the general public to lend a hand to help the needy.

He took social media and stated, “Spare a thought for the vulnerable in your communities, including the elderly and disabled, and lend a helping hand.”

He further added that the Government of Dominica continues to build climate-resilient infrastructure and develop strategies to strengthen the systems and boost capacity at the individual and community levels to more effectively respond to disaster impacts.

PM Skerrit concluded, “In this season and always, your government is in your corner. May God bless and protect us all.”
