DLP President blames Barbados govt for increase in COVID-19 cases

Barbados: The massive spike in COVID-19 cases in Barbados is the primary concern of all people in the nation. The opposition is accusing the current government of not managing the COVID-19 situation accurately.

Recently it was reported ten people had tested positive for COVID-19, with five of those cases being local. Then, the President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Verla De Peiza, criticized the current government.

The opposition is claiming the measure to choose economy over the health of people is wrong at all.

President of Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Verla De Peiza, disputed that the Prime Minister, Mia Amor Mottley led government should have closed its borders to persons from high-risk countries long ago.

According to the President of the Democratic Labour Party (DLP), Verla De Peiza, “The recent statement that there is now COVID-19 transmission among the local population is one that depresses the DLP. This Barbados Labour Party has been so obsessed with its economic interests that it has continued to keep our island’s borders open to travel from high-risk jurisdictions.”

Further, she added, “Every country within the Caribbean safeguarded its residents by momentarily banning tourists from high-risk countries; their citizens came first. But Government of Barbados refused to do the same.”

De Peiza said this was the actual reason for the increase in covid-19 cases. Precautions are the only key to restrict the expansion of lethal coronavirus. She disputed that Government should be held accountable for any local or community spread of the virus.

“The situation was spinning out of Government’s control, yet there was no response to safeguard nationals and protect the health and wellbeing of those on the frontline who live among their families and friends,” she added.

Encapsulated, she made a point by adding that “security guards working at a Government facility who were revealed through circumstances not to their making were recently sent home to quarantine. The Government didn’t see it fit for them to be isolated in a hotel or any other facility at the state’s expense,”
