“Despite challenges, St Lucia continues to shine” Independence message from UWP

St Lucia: On the occasion of independence, United Workers Party gave a message to the citizens of the nation.

UWP wrote, As St Lucia celebrates its 42nd festival of independence during this especially trying time in the world, we are called upon, like never before, to be our brother’s keeper.

Moreover, with all our hopes and dreams for the future, now more than ever, our actions with each passing day are even more critical. In simple terms, our lives depend on it.

Since the father of our nation, Sir John George Melvin Compton, led us to independence in 1979, our beloved island, the Helen of the West, has grown by leaps and bounds. Although not without challenges, we have followed his lead, forging ahead to create a land of opportunity for all.

Soon after attaining independence in 1979, we celebrated the first Nobel Prize for Economics awarded to a son of the soil, Sir Arthur Lewis. This feat was followed in 1992 by Sir Derek Walcott, who won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

These two examples of the tremendous impact Saint Lucians have had on the world reveal our undeniable abilities regardless of our size. Despite challenges we may often face, hard work and perseverance cause us to rise above and beyond.

We have had to battle hurricanes, floods, world economic crises, and other impediments to the progress of a small island nation like ours. Yet despite and despite them all, our country continues to shine.

As we continue to bolster our infrastructure and human resources with the renovation of the Hewanorra International Airport, the upcoming cruise ship port in Vieux Fort, rebuilding and delivery of St. Jude’s Hospital, unprecedented road works across the island, rebuilding schools, enhancing services, and opportunities, let us not be complacent. We must all continue working harmoniously, regardless of color, class, or creed, to maintain our world-renowned charm, wit, and professionalism.

The development of sporting facilities, which include the National Sporting Academy, early childhood education, business incubators, and more, have all been designed to enhance the competitiveness and viability of our people.

Saint Lucia continues to be indebted to the doctors, nurses, policemen and women, firefighters, emergency medical technicians, teachers, prison officers, and all the front-line workers. They have been at the forefront of the fight against the virus. They have gone above and beyond the call of duty to ensure our lives can be as safe and comfortable as possible.

We all are forever grateful to the cashiers, supermarket workers, minibus drivers, gas station attendants, hotel workers, market vendors, and all those who worked to keep Saint Lucia moving.

For this forty-second anniversary of independence, let us continue working together and be our brother’s keeper. Our political leader, Prime Minister Allen Chastanet, has proven to the world that Saint Lucia, regardless of size, is a giant on the world stage. This article was written by UWP.
