Curfew in sections of Portmore, St Catherine amid rise in crime

Amid the high rise in the crime rate, the Constabulary Force of Jamaica has imposed a curfew in the sections of Gregory Park in Portmore, St Catherine.

The curfew came in effect from December 18, 2021, at around 6 pm and will remain until Monday, December 20, 2021. 

As per the authorities, there were many violence and crime cases reported in the particular region to specific boundaries, which are as follows – 

In the North – Along the Dyke Road about 1,759 metres from the round-a-bout to the intersection of the Portmore Villa Boulevard and Dyke Road.

In the West – Along the Municipal Boulevard about 1,322 metres from the intersection of the train line to the round-a-bout.

In the East – Along Dyke Road about 695 metres from the intersection of Portmore Villa Boulevard to the train line. 

In the South – Along the train line from the intersection of Dyke Road to the junction of the Municipal Boulevard about 2,080 metres.

Crime in Jamaica: 

Since the island got independence in the year 1962, it had the lowest crime rate, but now Jamaica is the one that’s reporting the highest number of violence, abduction, murder and suicide cases in the region. 

At present several sections of the island are under a state of emergency and curfew. Prime Minister Andrew Holness promised to eradicate crime from the island country. 

Apart from this, the COVID-19 virus is also one of the deadliest challenges ahead of the Jamaican administration. The numbers show that 703,395 (23.8%) of the individuals have received their first jabs of the COVID-19 vaccine. 

While, in total, 549,156 (18.5%) people are those who have taken their required doses of the COVID-19 vaccines and are now fully immunised against the contagious viral disease, so far. 

More than 11,00,000 COVID-19 vaccine jabs have been administered in Jamaica at several vaccination centres.
