The Cheddi Jagan International Airport marked a remarkable increase of 87% in cargo activity in recent years. As per the reports, the airport handled an impressive growth of 2.8 million kilograms of cargo as compared to 2020.
This growth shed light on the unwavering commitment and dedication of the management of the airport towards increasing significance in the regional cargo sector. Notably, the kilograms of cargo which was handled in 2024, includes 6,015,629 and on the other hand in 2020, it was around 3,215,347 kilograms.
The CEO of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport, Ramesh Ghir stated that because of the strategic blend of factors undertaken by them, the existing airlines have notably expanded their cargo operations which has led to the growth and success of those airports. He also added that these existing airlines have started to offer more frequent flights to manage the rising volume of goods.
Along with that, he also mentioned that this enhanced capacity of goods is crucial in catering to the growing demand for efficient cargo transport. The CEO also mentioned that the entrance of major carriers such as LATAM and British Airways has significantly strengthened the capabilities of airport which has provided businesses with more options and better rates which has stimulated the cargo market.
Moreover, the growth in the cargo movement at the Cheddi Jagan International Airport is also because of an effective combination of the economic drivers of Guyana. The growth in the agricultural sector is also promoting the need for air cargo services because the exports of crops and agricultural products require swift and efficient transportation to global markets.
Along with that, this surge has also led to a rise in outbound cargo flights which are transporting the Guyana’s agricultural produce globally. The growing oil and gas industry of the Guyana is playing a huge role in contributing to the cargo growth and make its operations smooth.
Also, with the discussions revolved around for additional cargo capacity and the key industries of Guyana which are thriving, the airport is set for sustained growth and development. This expansion benefits the airport and is crucial in facilitating the economic progress of Guyana by streamlining the import and export of essential goods.
