British High Commissioner visits Dominica, meets President and PM Skerrit

Roseau, Dominica: The British High Commissioner To Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean H.E Scott Furssedonn-Wood, is in Dominica for an official visit. Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit cordially welcomed the British Commissioner and his delegation.

As per the sources, the British High Commissioner, along with his team, would be paying a visit to the projects sites in the Kalinago Territory and Portsmouth while exploring new collaboration areas. Cozier Frederick, the Minister of Environment, Rural Modernization and Kalinago Upliftment, accompanied the British High Commissioner on his visit to the project sites. 

The British High Commissioner also met Dominican President Charles Savarin and Prime Minister Skerrit while he was on a visit during his first day and held a discussion on numerous significant matters. Both the parties also held discussions on the environmental issue of climate change.  

PM Skerrit tweeted, “Dominica is pleased to welcome H.E @UKScottFW MVO – British High Commissioner to Barbados & the Eastern Caribbean and his delegation, who are on an official visit to our island. We look forward to fruitful discussions over the next four days”.  

Meanwhile, the British High Commissioner asserted via tweet, “Thank you, Chief Ouboutou & Minister Cozier Frederick, for sharing such fascinating insights into the history and culture of Dominica’s #Indigenous people”.  

This was the first-ever official visit of the British High Commissioner to the Commonwealth of Dominica. 

The British High Commissioner noted, “Thank you, Prime Minister, for inviting me to attend Cabinet in Dominica today. It was great to discuss the strength and breadth of the UK-Dominica partnership in so many areas”. 

Apart from this, as a sign of Kalinago friendship, the Environment Minister gifted a necklace to the British High Commissioner. 

The last visit of the British High Commissioner was with the Prince of Wales in the year 2017, after Hurricane Maria hit the island country. Recalling the devastating impact of the Hurricane, the British High Commissioner noted, the island witnessed massive destruction as 90% of the buildings were decimated, forests stripped bare, and cars were strewn around. 

Appreciating the determination of the Dominican people, the British High Commissioner further asserted, “What I remember most about that visit to Dominica was the extraordinary resilience of people who’d suffered so much. Their determination to rebuild their lives. Not to be beaten, despite losing everything”.
