BMS: Small Craft Advisory effect continues to worsen Marine conditions

Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) announced the continuous state of a small craft advisory effect in Barbados. As per the Marine forecast, the seas will remain moderate in open water, with swells ranging from 1.5 to 2.5 meters (5 to 8 ft) and increasing. 

According to BMS, the sea bathers and small craft operators should exercise caution. 

Hazard Information

It is expected that a strong Atlantic high-pressure system will generate winds of 20 to 25 knots (35 to 45 km/h) with higher gusts over the next few days in combination with a low-pressure system in the North Atlantic. 

Notably, this increase in wind speed will worsen the sea conditions, and waves of 2.0 metres to 3.0 metres are expected in open waters in the coastal area from January 22. Therefore, a small boat advisory is in effect for higher-than-normal sea waves. 

The conditions of the sea are expected to remain disturbed throughout the week as model guidance displays a further collapse in seas with swells of 3.0 m or greater possible in the marine area starting Thursday.

During this time, the winds are expected to increase, and therefore, BMS may update this Advisory to a ‘Small Craft Warning and High Surf Advisory’ in a few days.

Weather update, January 22

BMS shared that the people of Barbados may experience a mix of sunshine and clouds with occasional scattered light showers. The Atlantic high-pressure system will be the dominant feature.

Winds Forecast: Winds across the country may remain moderate easterly breeze from 30 to 35 km/h, which is equal to 19 to 22 mph. 

Additionally, there is no significant dust haze forecasted across the region.
