The Barbados Revenue Authority (BRA) is investigating reports of information about car registration application details leaking on social media and the internet.
This has brought to the fore very pressing concerns over the security of personal data entrusted to government systems and serves to drive home the increasingly palpable need for tight, digital safeguards.
The swift response is reflective of the commitment of the BRA to practice transparency and accountability. It is working closely with law enforcement agencies and other partners in order to determine the nature and scope of the data breach.
Following this course of action, the Data Commissioner has been notified in observance of the proper data protection rules. Again, the nature, cause, and extent of leakage are not reported to ensure the integrity of the investigation going on.
In a precautionary measure, the BRA has locked down access to its vehicle registration portal, which was a severe setback in the delivery of service. However, the Authority regrets that this has inconvenienced the public. The BRA expresses that these steps are necessary to protect the integrity of the system during this investigation.
Yet a still-broader question is raised by the incident regarding the robustness of the BRA’s data security infrastructure, for stakeholders wondering if better safeguards might have been possible to prevent such a situation from arising.
In its statement, the BRA placed ample assurance that protecting personal information is paramount and public trust is crucial to its operations.
However, amidst the adversity, trust has been breached. This brings in even more work for the BRA to ensure that this is not just an end of the whole issue but also a guarantee into the future, in terms of public assurance that such breach is not going to be in sight again.
Meanwhile, the BRA has been warning Barbadians to be watchful, to check their personal accounts, and to notify the Authority if any suspicious activity is afoot. An advisory in such a manner reflects a global trend in data breach responses wherein people are advised to take precautions even as personal information is kept by a reputable institution.
One aspect that has come increasingly into focus in protecting personal data is the role of the public. Hence, the call for more data literacy and education in Barbados would be a necessity.
As the BRA works towards resolving the issue, this incident focuses on why proper data protection must be ensured in an increasingly digital world.
