Prime Minister Philip Davis issued a statement in which he said that the Royal Bahamas Defense Force has deployed a significantly large naval fleet. The force is using aircrafts, surface vessels and 120 highly trained operatives, who have collectively established a blockade in the southern region of the country.
This has enabled the Royal Bahamas Defense Force to round up Haitians who are fleeing the unchecked violence perpetrated by gangs in the nation, which has left the nation in shambles.
The release of 4,000 criminals, set free by gang members who broke into a Haitian Prison, has alarmed neighbouring nations. This is primarily because there exists a distinct possibility that these individuals will make attempts to reach nations such as the Bahamas, which presents a significant risk.
PM Davis also stated the following, “As we expand our patrols in our southern waters, the United States and the United Kingdom are also working to position assets in the region. We are working with the US Coast Guard, with Turks and Caicos, and with the Cuban Border Patrol, to share critical intelligence and align our efforts.”
“Through these collaborative efforts, we have successfully intercepted a number of vessels originating from Haiti… We Bahamians are a compassionate people, but we simply cannot absorb additional burdens or security risks at home.”
Prime Minister Davis said that the authorities in the Bahamas are committed to repatriating Haitians in a manner which ensures the safety of their officers and takes into account the rights and dignity of Haitians.
It has been revealed that 50 Haitians were apprehended by authorities on the 16th of March, approximately 8km from Bell’s Island in the Bahamas.
While the situation with the Bahamas continues to develop, the United Nations and human rights groups have repeatedly requested the Dominican Republic to stop deporting individuals who are crossing into the nation from neighbouring Haiti. The deteriorating situation in Haiti and the many instances of violence in the nation have forced citizens to make attempts to leave the nation and find safety elsewhere.
William Charpentier, who is the coordinator for the Dominican-based National Coalition for Migrations and Refugees, stated the following, “If the government could postpone or diminish the push for deportations, it would be an achievement… an important contribution to the Haitian population.”
There have been reports which suggest that the Dominican Republic has been rounding up suspected Haitians and transporting them in cages, which has been deemed inhumane by many observers.
The United Nations Secretary General, Antonio Gueterres, highlighted the fact that the entire world is concerned with the manner in which the situation in Haiti continues to get worse with time. Authorities have found it extremely hard to regain control as violent elements have made it extremely hard for average citizens to remain safe and get access to basic necessities such as food and medical supplies.
