Antigua and Barbuda swimmers shine, claimed 4 medals in Mexico

Antigua and Barbuda: The swimmers from Antigua and Barbuda shined in Mexico, bringing laurels to the nation by claiming four medals. The members of the swimming national team participated in the C.C.C.A.N. Championships, which were scheduled to take place from June 17th to 23rd, 2024.

The C.C.C.A.N. Championships is an aquatics championship for countries in Central America and Caribbean region. It is held every odd year with a motive to develop, control and facilitate the aquatic discipline in the region.

A total of nine swimmers participated in the competition, out of which eight participated in pool-based events and one competed in the open water competition. The female swimmers who competed in the competition include, Mila Festina Cromer, Keziah Joseph, Madison MacMillan and Ellie Shaw.

The male swimmers include, Jamie Tranter, Alessandro Bazzoni, Naeem De Souza and Jadon Wuilliez. On the other hand, one swimmer who competed in the open water competition was Yachine Williams.

Out of all these swimmers, only two swimmers were the sole athletes to have won medals for Antigua and Barbuda. Ellie Shaw secured two bronze medals in the 50-meter and 100-meter women’s breaststroke events respectively. Meanwhile, Jadon Wuilliez also claimed two medals, gold in the 50-meter men’s breaststroke and a bronze medal in the 100-meter event.

All the swimmers who participated in the event faced several challenging conditions, but the Antigua and Barbuda national team claimed a total of 16 finalist slots, including 5 in the A Finals and 11 in the B Finals.

During the competition held in Mexico, several swimmers achieved their personal best times, which includes, Kezia Joseph in the 50 meters and 100 meters butterfly, Mila Festini Coromer in 100 meters freestyle, Jamie Tranter in the 50 meters backstroke and 200 meters freestyle, Jadon Wuilliez in 50 meters freestyle event and Alessandro Bazzoni in the 100 meters and 200 meters freestyle, and the 200 meters individual medley.

Also, the CCCAN Championships in Mexico was also disrupted due to the passage of tropical storm which led to the changes in the format during the final two days to timed finals. The tropical storm also resulted in the cancellation of open water competition.

Moreover, Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne extended congratulations to the medal holders as well as lauded all the participants for showcasing their best efforts in the competition. He also appreciated the entire Antigua and Barbuda Swimming Federation for always encouraging the young individuals towards athletics and ensuring their overall development as a whole.
