Antigua and Barbuda marks 1 Year of historic Space journey by mother-daughter duo

Antigua and Barbuda: The Tourism Authority is celebrating the one-year anniversary of the moment when Antigua and Barbuda etched their mark in the cosmos.

On 10 August 2023, Galactic 02 shattered all barriers, and a mother-daughter duo from the island nation, Keisha Schahaff and Anastatia Mayers, became the first flying astronauts from the Caribbean.

While celebrating the 1 year of this achievement, the tourism authority stated that this accomplishment still feels like “Out of the World.” Notably, Keisha Schahaff and her daughter Anastatia Mayers registered their names in the celestial chronicles as they became the first Caribbeans to travel to space on voyage dubbed “Galactic 02.”

The journey of mother-daughter duo was begun on 10thAugust 2023, when the Virgin Galactic 02 Spacecraft roared to life at the Spaceport America in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico. Their journey marked as a historic milestone in the realm of space and is also a testament to the unwavering commitment and dedication of the duo towards their dreams.

Keisha Schahaff and Anastatia Mayers were accompanied by Jon Goodwin to their journey to the space. Jon Goodwin is a former Olympian who also travelled along the mother-daughter duo. With their successful completion of the journey to the space, the trio added several tags to their names.

As Keisha Schahaff and Anastatia Mayers became the first mother-daughter duo and the first people from the Caribbean to make their journey to the Cosmos. Jon Goodwin became the first Olympian to make his visit to the space. Along with that, Ana was only 18 years old when she flew into space and became the youngest person to go to space. Along with that, the mother-daughter duo also added the tag of becoming the sixth and seventh Black women to make their visit to the space.


Their journey to the space in the Virgin Galactic was broadcasted on massive screens with images of the local Antigua festivities in turn beamed out to the global audience.

All the citizens of Antigua and Barbuda united together in a display of national pride and celebrated the massive success of the Antiguans. While shedding light on their achievement, the Prime Minister Gaston Browne stated that this accomplishment embodies the essence of their nation. He further continued to say that this achievement shed light on the determination and their commitment to forging new frontiers.

Moreover, the Minister of Tourism of Antigua and Barbuda, Charles “Max” Fernandez also called their journey to the space “a historic moment.” He further asserted that their journey beckons the world to experience the wonders of the island nation, where countless horizons meet pristine landscapes.

As Antigua and Barbuda is celebrating 1 year of that accomplishment, it sheds light on the belief that space is for everyone. Along with that, their journey to space has inspired people and communities around the world. While celebrating 1 year of this journey, the tourism authority of the island nation asked all the countrymen to come together and join them in reflecting on that incredible milestone as they redefine who can reach for the stars.
