American Airlines’ inaugural flight from Philadelphia lands in Barbados, operated by Barbadians
American Airlines AA 549 touched down at the Grantley Adam International Airport (GAIA) at around 1:55 PM.

The Tourism Authority of Barbados marked a significant milestone as they welcomed the inaugural flight of the American Airlines that flew directly from Philadelphia, United States of America to the island nation on Saturday, 9th November 2024, which was operated by two Barbadians.
The nonstop Flight AA 549 was operated under the command of Captain Dillon Jackson and First Officer Akiel Alleyne, both Barbadians, marking a huge development for the aviation sector of the country.
As per the details, the American Airlines AA 549 touched down at the Grantley Adam International Airport (GAIA) at around 1:55 PM. The inaugural arrival of the American Airline from Philadelphia brought around 118 passengers to Barbados, aiming to strengthen new relations and boosting the tourism sector of the country.
All the passengers boarded the inaugural flight and the crew members of American Airlines from Philadelphia to Barbados were welcomed by several delegates.
The delegates that attended the inaugural flight includes, Minister of Tourism of International Transport, Ian Gooding-Edghill; Chairperson of the Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI), Shelly Williams; the BTMI’s Chief Executive Officer, Andrea Franklin; Political and Economic Country Officer at the United States of America’s Embassy in Barbados, Gabriel Knight and Haynesville Tuk Band and Dancers; and stiltwalkers.
As per the details, the captain of the inaugural flight, Dillon Jackson mother joined him on board as well as the parents of First Officer Alleyne, Blondelle Warner and Keith Alleyne.
While shedding light on these new non-stop services from Philadelphia to Barbados, the tourism minister, Gooding-Edghill said that it will play a huge role in facilitating greater connectivity. He stated that it would bring large number of international travellers to their island from one of the most populous cities in the United States.
Minister also said that these services would also provide access to Barbados from one of the biggest hubs of Trans-Atlantic travel. He said that these services would open doors to several opportunities for the local citizens of the island nation, enhancing their overall market conditions.
The Tourism Authority of Barbados marked another significant milestone on the same day. They welcomed six AA aircraft on the tarmac at Grantley Adams International Airport in a single day. The arrival of six aircrafts together shed light on the efforts undertaken by the tourism authority towards positioning the country as a premier destination for international travellers.
