Trinidad and Tobago: The Ruby- topaz hummingbird or Chrysolampis mosquitus is a very beautiful species having the habitat in Trinidad and Tobago. This bird species fascinates the minds of many as its beauty is not the only limit for this but also has very unique mating rituals and breeding patterns.
Earlier, the Ruby-topaz had open habitats such as Savannas, forests, coastal regions or gardens. However, now these are native to various South American regions which are:
- Venezuela
- Guyana
- Trinidad and Tobago
- Suriname
- Brazil
Connecting with this, these birds generally thrive in the areas which contain abundance of flowers. A reason for this can be stated as their primary feed habits on nectar as they were found in open areas.
Feeding
The Ruby-topaz hummingbirds have long bills and tongues which allow the birds to reach deep into flowers, this enables them to extract nectar. The birds feed on flowers to consume nectar. Along with this, small insects and spiders as a source of protein are also consumed by these birds.
Mating Rituals
The Ruby-topaz hummingbirds have very interesting mating rituals and during the breeding season, the male birds display aerial displays of swift, zigzag flight patterns and high-speed dives. As well as, these birds try to attract the females by displaying accompanied by chirping and buzzing sounds.
Interestingly, gorget (ruby red crest and throat feathers) of the male birds displayed during breeding season allure the female species to the extent.
Breeding Patterns
A male Ruby-topaz hummingbird mates with multiple females, scientifically known as polygynous breeding pattern. Once the successful courtship gets displayed, male birds establish and defend territories which can have nesting sites.
Moreover, the female birds then use plant fibers, spider webs and moss to construct a nest. The constructed nest is in cup shape.
Incubation and Parenting
Excitingly, as the eggs hatch, both the parents male and female, share the responsibility of feeding and caring. And, generally the incubation period of the bird is almost 15 to 18 days.
It is important to note that there is a need for the conservation of this bird species as habitat loss due to deforestation has posed a threat to the Ruby-topaz hummingbirds.
