Guyana: Dr Irfaan Ali reassured the Guyanese diaspora in New York that his “commitment to the people and all of Guyana is unwavering”.
President gave this assurance on Sunday evening, during an address to the Interfaith Forum at the Jamaica Performing Arts Center (JPAC), in Jamaica, New York.
He said that ‘One Guyana’ is not a phrase or slogan but a movement that “requires action, commitment and fulfilment of every single one of us joining collectively in pushing Guyana forward”.
The country, he added, must be built on a system that promotes peace, dignity, respect, and honour and is embodied in the rule of law.
In providing an update on developmental projects, the President pointed to several sectors in which great strides have been made, including housing, education, technology, and health.
Following his address, he fielded questions from a large group of US-based Guyanese and spent time discussing various issues, including the banking system, crime and security, social programmes, technology, and mental health.
President Ali was accompanied by Hugh Todd – Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation; Permanent Representative of Guyana to the United Nations, Ambassador Carolyn Rodrigues; and Foreign Secretary Robert Persaud, among others.
Earlier, on Sunday, Head of State Dr Irfaan Ali spoke of his Government’s vision for the development of Guyana and called for synergy between all Guyanese in achieving progression.
He highlighted his ‘One Guyana’ agenda and deliberated on its virtues of togetherness and cooperation to an audience of US-based Guyanese during a diaspora engagement in Orlando, Florida, on Saturday afternoon.
The Head of State also underscored the transformation process, explaining in detail its positivity across the country while inviting his compatriots to return to Guyana to benefit from its developmental opportunities.
“We are building a Guyana in which every single Guyanese will enjoy the fruit of our labour.”
During his address, President Ali also touched on the changes necessary for development, the potential of Guyana as an oil-producing nation and plans by the Government to use the needed finances to enhance traditional sectors and create new ones.
He said that all of his energy and that of his Cabinet would be spent on executing this vision which is intended to benefit not only the current generation but future generations of Guyanese.
