Guyana: Law enforcement agencies, in their continued efforts to stem the flow of illegal arms and narcotics through the country, on Tuesday succeeded in uncovering a major find with ammunition and firearms.
The intelligence-led operation, spearheaded by ranks of the CID H/Q and Narcotics branch, led to the successful raid of an alleyway at Park Place, South Ruimveldt, which is enclosed by a playfield and three houses.
Here, ranks zeroed in on their target based on a well-planned operation headed by a Cadet officer. This, according to police reports, led them to a pink suitcase that was concealed under some zinc sheets in a cluster of bushes.
Inside the suitcase, contained an impressive arsenal, including:
- Three ATN Viper scopes
- One Bushnell rangefinder
- One black AR rifle
- One Black and Blue AR Rifle
- One BSA telescope sight
- A single Ruger 9mm pistol with one magazine
- One Taurus 9mm Pistol with one magazine
- 925 rounds .223 caliber ammunition
- 20 rounds of .270WIN bullets
- 319 x 9mm rounds
- Thirty-three rounds of .68 caliber
- 76 rounds of .45 caliber ammunition
- 117 Rounds of .44 Ammo
- 106 live rounds of .380 caliber ammunition
- 156 rounds of 12-gauge rounds
Not only firearms and ammunition, but the suitcase also contained a large bag enveloped in a black plastic that contained a quantity of suspected cannabis, approximately weighing 3.20 lbs (1.5 kg).
The police have stated that photographs were taken of all the firearms, ammunition, and narcotics, and they were lodged for evidence. The firearms shall be sent for ballistics and examination to determine their sources and prove a possible connection with any form of criminal activity.
As of now, the investigators are tracing two individuals in connection with the recovered cache; the investigation remains open. This operation demonstrates how intelligence-led policing functions with a committed Guyana Police Force, in managing the scourge of the proliferation of illegal firearms and narcotics.
A seizure of that magnitude in weapons and drugs could only have been pulled off through cooperation with the CID and Narcotics branch and commitment in the interest of community safety and security.
The investigation, as it proceeds forward, the administration will put in their efforts to dismantle criminal networks and remain vigilant about the process and put those responsible, behind the bars. As community cooperation is vital in the fight against crime, the public is encouraged to report any suspicious activities to the police.
