Antigua and Barbuda: The authorities have announced the launch of the newly developed international airport in Barbuda with a grand celebration on 3rd October 2024. The airport has received approval from the Eastern Caribbean Civil Aviation Authority (ECCAA) and looks forward to public operation.

The CEO of the Antigua and Barbuda Airport Authority (ABBA), Wendy Francette- Williams shared the information about the upcoming launch while highlighting that the new airport will be named Arthur Nibs International Airport upon completion.

The Airport has notably undergone significant changes as it includes a newly developed 7100-foot runway and ongoing training for the fire service operators. Separate training areas for airport staff and other crucial partners.

The newly designed airport aims to deliver outstanding facilities to the residents by attracting tourists and ultimately leading to growth in the economic sector of the island nation.

The government has spent approximately US$ 14 million on its construction and aims to bring international travel at ease for residents across Antigua and Barbuda.

The authorities further highlighted that the old airport in Barbuda will be closing a day prior to the launch of the new one. As the federation awaits the launch, they are planning to commemorate the opening with a grand celebration featuring several flights connecting to the island.

The launch will be attended by many government officials and key stakeholders from Private sector operators. To accommodate them, several arrangements have been made including enhanced transport facilities.

Several facilities including LIAT 2020, Calvin Ayre Helicopters, and Air Wing’s aircraft will be utilized for this purpose. Ferry services are also set to operate to facilitate transportation to Barbuda for the event.

Notably, as the new airport nears its launch, the old airport will also undergo major renovation to be transformed into a high-end tourism destination. According to the sources, the government is aiming to transform the facility into a business hub.

This initiative aims to increase employment among youth, resulting in stronger economic growth. The projected building would also house DCA, the Department of the Environment, the Ministry of Barbuda Affairs, and the Antigua and Barbuda Transport Authority.
