Antigua and Barbuda records mild earthquake of 3.5 magnitude

Antigua and Barbuda: A mild earthquake of 3.5 magnitude struck the Caribbean Sea near Antigua Island on Sunday morning. The University of the West Indies, UWI0 Seismic Research Centre stated that the earthquake of 3.5 magnitude was recorded in the region at 8:01 am, local time.

As per the details, no immediate reports of any injury or deaths have been recorded yet. According to UW10 Seismic Research Centres preliminary reports, the earthquake’s epicentre was at Latitude 16.83 N and Longitude 61.06 W, with a depth of 10 kms.

The quake was also felt in Saint John’s Antigua and Barbuda 41 km, South East; Point – a Pitre, 64 km, North and Guadeloupe, Brades, Montserrat, 67 km East.

The UWI held a preliminary calculation to determine the potential of the quake and stated that their data is subject to potential revisions and pending evaluation by SRC analysts.

The management is asking all the citizens to take precautionary measures to avoid any kind of threat or danger. Along with that the citizens of the affected areas have also been advised to stay updated regarding all the information of weather disruption and earthquake.

Moreover, Antigua and Barbuda was also under the warning of the flash flooding due to heavy rainfall and thunderstorm activities in few of the areas of the region on Saturday. The nation has been receiving constant warnings of flooding due to the heat wave, gusty winds, isolated shower and lighting.

Also, the citizens residing in the flood-prone and low-lying areas are also asked to remain vigilant towards the situation and ensure them to be prepared for every kind of threat. The Hurricane Season 2024 has already started in the Caribbean region on 1st June and is estimated to cause several disruptions with the predicted passage of around 22 hurricanes.

Prime Minister of Antigua and Barbuda, Gaston Browne held big oil companies responsible for the carbon footprints and increased temperature. He noted that their company is one of the biggest reasons for the climate change and asked them to compensate the small island nations who are facing issues because of it.
