West Indies announces ODI squad for series against England

The West Indies Cricket selection committee announced their 15-member men’s squad for the upcoming CG United One-day International ODI series against England.

The West Indies Cricket selection committee announced their 15-member men’s squad for the upcoming CG United One-day International ODI series against England.

This series will take place form 3 December 2023.

The squad selected for the series:

  • Shai Hope
  • Alzarri Joseph
  • Alick Athanaze
  • Shane Dowrich
  • Brandon King
  • Oshane Thomas
  • Romario Shepherd
  • Kjorn Ottley
  • Roston Chase
  • Yannic Cariah
  • Shimron Hetmyer
  • Keacy Carty
  • Matthew Forde
  • Gudakesh Motie
  • Sherfane Rutherford

Shai Hope has been announced as the captain of the team with Alzarri Joseph as the vice-captain.

The selection team has selected two uncapped players for the series:

  • Sherfane Rutherford, the batting all rounder
  • Matthew Forde, the seam bowler

Both the players through their determination and hard work have earned the first call-up at the international level.

Shane Dowrich, the experienced wicket-keeper and batsman has been recalled by the selection panel. Shane Dowrich played his last match at the international level was in 2019.

Kjorn Ottley is also all set to return at international level as his last two ODIs were in January 2021.

Dr. Desmond Haynes, the lead selector stated that Alzarri Joseph has been named the vice-captain, seeing his maturing and the leadership qualities he possesses. He added that Joseph can prove to be a great leader in the future as they have seen his impressive progression for the Leeward Islands Hurricanes during the recent CG United Super50 Cup.

Haynes also said that this squad will give a tough fight to the English team.

The schedule of the matches:

The first CG United ODI will be played at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua on Sunday 3rd December 2023 at 9:30 am.

The second CG United will also take place on 6th December at Sir Vivian Richards Stadium, Antigua at 1:30 pm.

The final match of the series to occur at Kensington Oval, Barbados at 1:30 pm on Saturday 9th December 2023.

Unavailable players:

The selection stated that few of the players are unavailable for selection due to their different reasons such as:

  • Nicholas Pooran is not in the squad because he is prioritizing his preparation for T20 format.
  • Justin Greaves in unavailable for selection because of an injury he had to face in the CG United Super50 Cup.
  • Jason Holder is also not available for the selection because he prioritizes preparation for the T20 and Test format.

The selectors are picking players with the goal of winning ICC Cricket World Cup 2027.
