US Embassy in Guyana seizes 2,370 kgs cocaine, arrests 4 smugglers

The US Embassy in Guyana revealed that its officers arrested four suspects and seized 2,370 kilograms of cocaine approximately, 150 miles off the Guyana coast.

The officials of the United States (US) Embassy in Guyana seized 2,370 kilograms of cocaine and arrested four smugglers in connection to the findings. They recovered the illegal drugs at approximately 150 miles away from the Guyana Coast.

As per the information, the cocaine was found in a Self-automated semi-submersible ship by the USS Leyte Gulf. The cocaine was carried for smuggling purposes.

The authorities have reported that the exercise was conducted in collaboration with various other specialised departments such as,

  • US Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) Georgetown Country Office
  • Joint Interagency Task Force South (JIATFS)
  • Guyana Customs Anti-Narcotics Unit (CANU)
  • The United States Coast Guard (USCG)

The reports further stated that the authorities from both blocs received information about the trafficking of cocaine. They responded to the matter and searched the vessel. The officers managed to seize the craft at about 150 miles from Guyana’s Coast and thoroughly searched inside it.

While searching, they found a quantity of drugs, around 2,370 kilograms, which is estimated to be very expensive in the international illegal market. They arrested four suspects, who were present in the vessel.

The United States government expressed their commitment to support by extending a helping hand to the Caribbean partners to combat the problem of illegal trafficking or smuggling of narcotics and firearms with an aim to advance the citizen’s security.

Recently, the United States Coast Guard offloaded illegal drugs, which are estimated to cost around $52 million. The officials have arrested 27 suspected smugglers in Fort Lauderdale in connection to the findings.

The operation was executed with the support of the MH-65 Dolphin helicopter and its crew from the Coast Guard Helicopter Interdiction Tactical Squadron. The mission also included joint transactions with the cutter Munro and US Navy missile cruisers, such as USS Leyte Gulf CG-55.

Additionally, such stances of crimes put the security and safety of civilians at risk. The US Coast Guard is working consistently and dedicatedly to provide every possible safety to all the region’s citizens.
