Trinidad and Tobago witnessed 3 murders on Christmas eve

In a shocking incident, Trinidad and Tobago reported three killings on Christmas eve in two different shooting incidents.

Among the deceased are 28-year-old Shakeem Francis and 27-year-old Shaka Guy (in the same incident), a 32-year-old identified as Ricky Phillip.

What happened in the First incident:

As per the report of the police officials, Francis and Guy and the other unidentified 34-year-old man were in a black Nissan Almera, parked along Independence Square at around 4 pm on December 25, 2021; it is when assailants were in a speedy vehicle when they opened fire on the victims.

The driver of the Nissan Almera car immediately drove the three victims to the Port-of-Spain General Hospital, where Francis and Guy were declared dead by the doctors, while the third victim, who was seriously injured, is being admitted and treated, as per the statement of the police officials.

No other update yet has been provided by the police authorities related to the case, although an investigation has already been commenced.

The second incident –

Phillip, who was a resident of Mamoral, was shot down in his face on Christmas eve in the morning at around 7 am. The locals in the area, on hearing the sound of gunshots, immediately went to the crime scene, where they found the body of the victim in a blood bath lying on the main road.

Homicide Bureau Region III and Gran Couva police are investigating the murders and will soon provide an update related to the brutal killings.

The crime rate in Trinidad and Tobago:

If we compare the rate of killings on the island, it has seen a constant rise since 1999. The capital city of Trinidad and Tobago is the one reporting the highest number of murders.

The COVID-19 outbreak, drugs and gang-related issues are the main contributors to the rise of killings. However, as compared to the other nations of the Caribbean and Latin American region, Trinidad and Tobago has a low crime rate.
