Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago: Emancipation Support Committee of Trinidad and Tobago (ESCTT) has recently extended deep grief and sorrow on the passing of Iya Sangowunmi. The Committee took it to social media on March 31, 2023 and shared condolences.
The social media update read, “The Board of Directors and Staff of the Emancipation Support of Trinidad and Tobago (ESCTT) extends heartfelt condolences to the family as well as friends of Iya Sangowunmi and to the members of the Orisha community.”
Furthermore, it noted that Iya had a longstanding relationship with the ESCTT. Her deep concern for the education of African children in Trinidad and Tobago led to her partnering with the ESCTT to develop the Intervention for Education Programme. Iya went on to establish Abiadama to provide our children with an education rooted in the African tradition and to assist them in the development of Iwa Pele (Good and noble character).
As per the update, Iya Sangowunmi also made a sterling contribution to the recognition of November as African History in Trinidad and Tobago and played a significant role in the development and support of African History Month programmes.
ESCTT also mentioned that Iya will surely be missed by the Orisha Community, to which she introduced the Sango Osun Festival some 24 years ago and was a kind and wise mother to many.
“May her transition be safe, joyful and peaceful as she unites with the spirit of her ancestors and the Orishas. She will continue to live in our hearts and minds,” it prayed while concluding the post.
Many people came forward, and took it to the comment section, to express their condolence and grief towards Sangowunmi. One of the users related with her and stated, “My old school mate, may she Rest in Peace! Condolences to Tracy and siblings, all family and friends and to the Orisha Community!” while another commented, “Rest in Peace”.
