Tragedy Beyond Words: Barbados PM Mia Amor Mottley expresses sadness over Guyana dormitory fire

Bridgetown, Barbados: Mia Amor Mottley, Prime Minister of Barbados, has joined the other Caribbean leaders to express her sadness and grief on the passing of around 18 young girls and a small boy in Guyana. The students succumbed to the fire at the Mahdia Secondary School.

PM Mottley took it to Twitter and termed this tragedy beyond words. “The news of the fire at the Mahdia Secondary School in Guyana, which claimed the lives of 19 children late last night, is truly a tragedy beyond words,” she tweeted.

Further, she expressed her condolences and mentioned, “To Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali and the people of Guyana, I offer my sincere condolences and offer my support during this difficult time.”

President of Guyana, Dr Irfaan Ali, has described this incident as a ‘major disaster’ that is both horrifying and painful. After the fire was reported, swift action was taken by the government of Guyana.

After orders by President Ali, all possible medical facilities were arranged for quick and easy treatment of the students who were dealing with burns. Some of the students were also airlifted to the capital city of Guyana – Georgetown, for their better and advanced check-ups.

For now, the death toll has reached up to nineteen (19), and more than twenty (20) students are hospitalized and healing.

Other Caribbean leaders have also expressed their sadness and support towards the people and government of Guyana. Many, including Prime Minister of the Commonwealth of Dominica – Dr Roosevelt Skerrit, and Prime Minister of Grenada – Dickon Mitchell, took it on social media and highlighted that they are with the victim country during such a sad hour.
