Thea Lafond honoured with Dominica’s Award of Honour

Dominica’s first ever Olympic Gold medallist, Thea Lafond received Medal of Honour for rendering her meritorious services to the island nation in the field of sports. She was awarded by the President, Sylvanie Burton at the 46th anniversary of Independence of Dominica on 3rd November, 2024.

Notably, Thea Lafond-Gadson made history at the Paris 2024 Olympics by earning Dominica its first gold medal for her flawless performance in the women’s triple jump.

Dominica’s Award of Honour is considered the highest national award, and it is presented to individuals who have played a significant role in contributing to the development of the country.

Moreover, Thea Lafond became the recipient of this honour for her several significant accomplishments on the international platform.

Dominica’s star athlete, Thea Lafond Gadson has brought several laurels to the nation. She made history by becoming the first gold medallist in the Triple Jump at the 2024 Paris Olympics as well as the first athlete to win an Olympic medal for Dominica.

In addition to her Olympic success, she has also earned medals at the World Championship and World Athletics Indoor Medallist. Overall, Thea has claimed 14 major medals for her country in global competitions.

The Prime Minister, Roosevelt Skerrit, acknowledged Thea Lafond Gadson at his address during the celebration of the 46th anniversary of Independence. He called Thea “a shining example” and a true embodiment of what it means to be Dominican.

The Prime Minister added that Thea’s fierce journey to Olympic gold did not come easily. Rather, it was paid with sacrifice, with determination, and with an unbreakable spirit.

PM Skerrit further continued to say that in Lafond Gadson’s triumph, they have seen the power of perseverance, the strength of will, and the boundless potential of every single Dominican.

He added that when the world class athlete, Thea Lafond Gadson stood on the podium and the medal draped on her neck, it wasn’t just her victory but also a victory of every citizen who prayed for her and aspired to be like her.

Along with her, several other individuals were honoured for their remarkable services in their respective diverse fields which include:

  1. Cheryl Rolle: Business and Insurance
  2. Carol Severin-Abraham: Agriculture
  3. Catherine Janice Leighton-Armah: Diplomacy
  4. Gerald Corbette: Education
  5. Simeon Albert: Community Development
  6. Hudson Challenger: Education
  7. Martin Charles: Diplomacy and Sports
  8. Armour Thomas: Community Development
  9. Nigel Francis: Education and Culture
  10. Annette Bates: Community Development and Agriculture

Moreover, Dominica’s second highest award of honour, Sisserou Award of Honour was presented to Dentist Dr. Cyril Robinson and other representatives from the Government of the United Kingdom, the Government of Canada, and Range Developments.

Along with that, the Courtney Challenger received the Long Service Medal for Public Service and Adelina Destouche in the field of Education for her major contribution. Isaac Andre was honored with the Services Medal of Honour for his contributions to Sports.

The Prime Minister stated that these achievements shed light on the unwavering commitment and dedication of the citizens towards elevating the profile of Dominica to greater heights.

He added that they have produced excellence in all the fields be it, athletics, education, music, or in industry. He also ensured that the government would continue to invest in the people by providing them the tools to succeed and help Dominica rise.
