Trinidad & Tobago: Supporting our sisters conducted a zoom call to address challenges faced by women in Trinidad and Tobago.
‘Raising men in the right way is a community effort’ was the purpose of Supporting our sisters. They have addressed the very genuine question that holds in every girl’s life, is ” When is the first time you all have encounter unwanted actions by men?”
This question made everybody emotional. One of the members stated that walking on the streets is one of the most dangerous as women have to suffer unnecessary comments from men. It makes them feel disgraceful and disgusted.
On the other hand, another member Abena Hartley added that the biggest problem is, men pass comments, and we women let them do that; we need to stop continuing it. “We should stop them there only, and unnecessary jokes are not welcoming and must respond with, It’s not appropriate and not funny to the men,” added Hartley.
Raising men right in the families should be the primary goal that can stimulate the nation’s growth.
People have reacted via comments. A Facebook user commented, “We have to recognize that the ‘boogeyman/woman’ is sometimes in our home or our trusted circles. Honest, Open a conversation with our children as early as possible is important.”
Stephen Harper commented, “Thank you all for sharing your perspective and creating an Avenue to have a positive outlook.”
Another Facebook user wrote, “The culture is also encouraged by what is presented as jokes but is dangerous, e.g., After 12 is lunch.”
In this zoom call, Councillor Teresa Lynch, San Fernando City Corporation, Councillor Akeliah Glasgow, Vice Chairman of the Diego Martin Regional Corporation, Councillor Joy Benjamin, San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation, Councillor Kimberly Small, San Juan/Laventille Regional Corporation, Councillor Abena Hartley, Port of Spain City Corporation, and others participated in this zoom call on the official Facebook page of Jeniece Scott.
On the other hand, PNM’s official page of Facebook gave this information about the zoom call. It was a frank discussion on women’s issues and a path forward for the country. It shows how women are considerable for their community.
