St Kitts and Nevis: Government appoints Marcella Liburd JP as first female governor-general
Marcella Liburd JP has been appointed as the first female Governor-General of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis.

St Kitts and Nevis: Marcella Liburd JP has been appointed as the first female Governor-General of the Federation of St Kitts and Nevis. The appointment ceremony was conducted by the government of the nation on January 31, 2023 at 11:50 pm. The venue for the ceremony was hosted at the Government House, Springfield, Basseterre.
Prime Minister of the twin-island country of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew, has regarded the organisation as one of the most historic moment in the history of the Federation. Sir SW Tapley Seaton GCMG, CVO, KC, JP, LLP has been succeeded by Liburd. She has played various role and has worked as lawyer, teacher, Senator, Deputy Speaker, Speaker of the National Assembly, and Cabinet Minister of the government.
According to the government of St Kitts and Nevis, Liburd earned Bachelor honours degree in Laws in the year 1992 from Norman Manley Law School. From the same school, she earned a Legal Education Certificate also in the year 1994.
In addition to this, Liburd has also served under the St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party administration. She acted as the Prime Minister of the country on an occasion, and has served for Health, Social Services, Community Development, Culture and Gender Affairs Ministry. Along with this, she has also worked as Senator and Deputy Speaker.
Various legislations has been piloted by Liburd, including the Domestic Violence Act and Equal Pay Act. Along with such active participation, she also received nomination among prominent women for her contributions to the development of gender equality in 2011.
Marcella Liburd also became the first female elected Chairperson of St Kitts and Nevis Labour Party (SKNLP) in 2013. She became the first-ever female Deputy National Leader of the SKNLP in the year 2018.
Also, on Thursday, September 15, 2022, Marcella Liburd was appointed as the governor-general’s deputy.
