St Kitts and Nevis: St Kitts-Nevis Labour party continue the initiative to showcase some of the credible women who make up the St. Kitts-Nevis Labour Party’s backbone throughout March.
The spotlight shines on Senator Honourable Dr. Joyelle Clarke. She is a young, dynamic woman who advocates for environmental justice through activism and volunteerism.
Dr. Joyelle Clarke, who obtained her Ph.D. in Geography from the Department of Geography and Geology at UWI Mona Campus, was sworn in as a Senator of St. Kitts and Nevis, representing Her Majesty’s Royal Opposition on August 12, 2020. Dr. Clarke is known both regionally and locally as a strong stalwart, youth activist, and environmental advocate.
She is a representation of the future of Politics in St. Kitts and Nevis. A humble, caring, and dedicated individual who continues to speak in support of women and youth empowerment.
For her Ph.D., Senator Hon. Dr. Clarke explored disputes related to Land and Livelihood in St. Kitts in her peer review on Gender and Sustainable Livelihoods.
For the past ten years, she was engaged in livelihood research focusing on climate change, cooperatives, and agricultural livelihoods. During this time, she has led projects on livelihoods transition, conducted research, and developed programs in various capacities as a Government official, community activist, and educator.
On April 1, 2019, Dr. Joyelle Clarke led a delegation that included two students from the Cayon High School Environmental Club to participate in the American Geographers Annual Conference in Washington DC. The conference was a professional and scholarly gathering of over 9000 attendees, an opportunity that is usually afforded to students at the university level.
Dr. Clarke began a new career in teaching in 2015 and developed a close-knit relationship with the youths during her tenure as a trained Geography teacher at the Cayon High School (CHS). Her love for children, intertwined with her passion for the environment, motivated her to start the CHS Environmental Club.
She headed the Department of Constituency Empowerment in 2013 and implemented several incredibly beneficial initiatives within the department. The department focused on the civic engagement of communities and socio-economic development, such as the Monkey Capturing Project, which assisted many farmers throughout St. Kitts and Nevis, who were losing the majority of their crops to the monkeys. The project formed a buffer zone that attracted the primates, diverting them away from crop farms.
Dr. Joyelle Clarke is the Owner of Relate Consultancy and a partner in Agile Community Partners, where she helps companies and communities shape mutually beneficial programs, partnerships, and policies. The company works with large and small businesses, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.
Joyelle’s project work ranges from female livelihood support, community-based development initiatives, sustainable tourism, and environmental conservation. She has been engaged in developing and executing community-based projects in collaboration with community groups on behalf of the administration of St. Kitts and Nevis, including climate change initiatives, reforestation programs, and the establishment of school-based environmental programs.
Joyelle’s selfless and caring qualities have led to her involvement in numerous volunteer projects. She has been a long-standing youth activist encouraging environmental justice through activism and volunteerism. She was a committee member of the UNESCO Man and the Biosphere Program and a member of the National Steering Committee for the GEF Small Grants Program. She is currently working on the Mobile Media Unit and a Domestic Violence Awareness Project for and within the Cayon High School, a youth environmental advocacy video project, and an end hunger project called “10: One Farm, Zero Hunger“.
Joyelle is a woman of excellence and brilliance. A woman who cares. A woman of action. Today, we salute Senator Hon. Dr. Joyelle Clarke for her continuous contributions to the St. Kitts Nevis Labour Party.
