The Sixth Form Sisserou Singers group, marking three decades of musical excellence, will present its 30th Annual Musical Production, “Choral Legacy” by the end of the week from Friday July 12 to Sunday July 14. The performance will be given in Roseau and Portsmouth, showcasing cultural excellence.
This musical group was formed as a collaborative project in 1994, between the then Sixth Form College and the Division of Culture to come up with a chorale group at the request made by the college students. The Sixth Form Sisserou Singers group was set on a mission to fulfill the need of utilizing the medium of chorale music to develop a Youth Body of sound and refined character.
To give a brief of what the audience can expect, Dr Marie Pascale Affana, Director of the choir, stated that the show as always will be arranged into themed segments. The show will start with “Hallelujah and Thanksgiving” as it has been done for the last 30 years. There will be a Caribbean music section, paying tribute to the various regional sounds including Bouyon, and Caribbean folk music, with songs from Saint Lucia, St Vincent, Jamaica, Dominica and Trinidad and Tobago.
The point that the show will focus on is to impart the traditional Caribbean story through a display of folktales and cultural influences.
While expressing her feelings about the choir, Dr Affana said that the name was well fitted for the group. As the Sisserou Singers started in 1994, probably not many people expected it to create a legacy of 30 years, especially after the retirement of the founding Director, as one’s vision many a time cannot be maintained and carried on by the other.
She also added that the kind of production the group has is legacy, the material to be showcased will be legacy material. The choir is quite excited to show that good training for a period of 30 years can achieve great things, as the group was formed with the motto “Anything worth Doing is Worth Doing well”.
Shanica Bogeart, President of the Sixth Form Sisserou Singers, while expressing the impact of the choir, stated that the group has helped her a lot and she won’t deny the fact that the group is indeed profitable to the members as well as the people around. This year, it will not just celebrate the 30 years of musical and cultural excellence but also to honor the three decades of rich legacy of harmony, dedication and the passion that the esteemed choir has brought forth to the community and beyond.
