Security guard charged with two counts of robbery in Guyana

Devon Holder, a security officer and a resident of Lot 28 Samaroo Dam, Pouderoyen, West Bank Demerara, Guyana, was granted bail on Monday.

A Hoosein Security guard, who is also known as Day and Night, was taken to the Georgetown Magistrate Courts and was presented before Magistrate Rhondell Weever.

He was denied both charges by the Magistrate Rhondell Weever.

As per the information, it was alleged that the security officer robbed Sylwattie Sukhoo armed with a knife and snatched a gold chain worth $80,000 on 28th November 2023 at Stabroek, Georgetown.

As per the Police Prosecutor’s statement, Holder committed both crimes while wearing his uniform of a security officer.

The Prosecutor shed light on the seriousness of the offence and stated that the money involved in this case is a huge amount.

Moreover, the prosecutor requested the magistrate to keep the accused on remand as people who have complained against him are threatened by him. If he is released on bail, he has the ability to hurt them.

During his appearance at the court, Holder told the presiding magistrate that he could not be involved in the robbery incident as he was at his workplace when the officers claimed the crimes occurred.

He also added that he was at his home when the police officers took him into custody and did not even let him call his family members.

He stated that he was forced to sign a statement.

It was also mentioned by the Prosecutor that De Freitas described the man who robbed her as “slim built, tall with plait hair of African descent.”

Also, Holder was granted bail of the two charges with the amount of $60,000 each.

As per the information, it was also stated that while out on bail, Holder is required to report to the Brickdam Police Station every two weeks. The period will commence from 15th December, 2023.

His next court date given by the magistrate is 15th January 2024.
