The organisation, namely Mamavation tested 29 condoms and jelly lubes and out of which 6 were found to be containing PFAS levels. They noted PFAS exposure is very harmful and destructive, and can cause serious diseases like cancer, infertility, or many other.
Notably, PFAS stands for Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances which are very tiny in shape and take thousands of years to break down in the environment or body. That’s why they are also known as ‘forever chemicals. They can lead to several health problems like cancer, asthma, fertility issues, obesity, birth abnormalities, diabetes, and autism.
As per the details, research was conducted on trojan condoms and K-Y jelly lube and gels and it was found that the exposure of the tiny particles contained in these items are very harmful to people.
While shedding light on the sensitivity of the penis and vagina, the researchers stated that their skin is thin and has many blood levels. Therefore, their exposure to those chemicals can lead to cause several problems. The problems that it can cause includes, like infertility, sperm damage, and pregnancy difficulties entering the bloodstream and affecting other organs.
During the research, the Women’s Health Advocacy determined Fluorine which is a marker of PFAS, in 29 items. As per the reports, out of 29 goods, six of them contained PFAS levels.
As per the findings, it was found that the Trojan Ultra-Thin Condoms had 13ppm for Ultra Sensitivity, which is above the 10ppm danger standard. Fluorine was around threefold in Union Standard Ultra-Thin Lubricated Male Latex Condoms, containing 25 ppm.
K-Y Jelly Classic Water-Based Personal Lubricant was tested and found 13 ppm and on the other hand, Lola Tingling Mint Pleasure Gel for Spot-On Arousal had the highest value of 39 ppm.
While highlighting the need to remove those chemicals, one of the researchers stated that some condom contains such chemicals that can contaminate the female reproductive tract. This contamination can cause miscarriage, birth defects, developmental disabilities in children, or infertility.
