PM Terrance Drew highlights transformative projects for Sustainable Island State Agenda

The Prime Minister Dr Terrance Drew during his recent online speech session highlighted the ongoing significant projects that are undertaken by the government. He expressed his aim of continuing to capitalise on these projects with their primary motive of leading the nation towards their agenda of becoming a Sustainable Island State.

While connecting SEED (Sustainable Economic Expansion and Diversification with the ongoing projects, the Prime Minister stated that, just as the SEED needs water to grow into a plant. In a similar manner, their government will continue to make significant investments in their projects to ensure a sustainable future for all the citizens of the country.

The Projects that were highlighted by PM Terrance Drew include

JNF CLIMATE-SMART GENERAL HOSPITAL

While shedding light on this project, the Prime Minister stated that the work has been steadily progressing on the hospital. He stated that once the completion of the project, it will play a huge role in providing optimum healthcare facility for all the citizens of the island nation.

He stated that the JNF Climate-Smart Hospital is all set to become one of the leading hospitals in the Caribbean. This hospital will be hurricane-resistant, modern, and powered by renewable energy, in order to ensure that this state-of-the-art healthcare facility not only meets the current needs but also anticipates future healthcare challenges.

This hospital has been funded by the Republic of China (Taiwan) and has therefore extended invitation to all the healthcare professionals at home and abroad to help them bring this vision to life.

NEW BASSETERRE HIGH SCHOOL

The Prime Minister stated that the construction of the new Basseterre High School is expected to be start by the second quarter of 2025. This school has been funded by the CBI of St Kitts and Nevis, aiming to enhance the education sector of the country to greater heights.

He stated that this school will be a world-class educational institution in order to offer a wide range of academic programs, degrees, and certifications that cater to diverse educational needs and career aspirations.

NEEDMUST POWER PLANT EXPANSION PROJECT

This Needmust Power plant expansion project is funded by the Saudi Fund for Development with a vision to strengthen their electrical grid by installing modern and fuel-efficient power generators. PM Terrance Drew stated that this project will play a pivotal role in ensuring a stable energy supply for homes and businesses alike.

SMART HOMES INITIATIVE

This significant project of smart homes has also been funded by CIBC Caribbean. While emphasising on this project, the Prime Minister stated that it would play a key role in bringing hundreds of homes to the people of St Kitts and Nevis, with 90 percent of the construction workforce being local.

The Prime Minister noted that the construction of the smart homes will begin with at least 100 hurricane-resistant homes by the end of 2024.

2 MILLION GALLON PER DAY BASSETERRE DESALINATION PLANT

The Prime Minister, Terrance Drew also highlighted about the 2 million gallon per day Basseterre Desalination Plant and stated that it has finally reached its final pre-construction stage. He added that they are determined to provide fresh, consistent water to the people of the St Kitts and Nevis by the third quarter of 2025.

He further continued to say that the construction process of the project will also play a huge role in creating numerous jobs and permanent positions for plant workers when it opens next year.

PRIME CREATIVE ARTS CENTER

PM Terrance Drew also shed light on the Prime Creative Arts Center and stated that this facility at Half Moon Heights is a great platform for all the artists to showcase their talent, creativity and techniques.

He added that this center will be a historic hub for creative and artistic expression, a great opportunity for the artists to showcase their performance and foster cultural pride.

The Prime Minister further also mentioned about projects including Christophe Harbour Redevelopment, the Reinvigoration of Kittitian Hill, Geothermal Energy and many more. He stated that the government of St Kitts and Nevis alone cannot drive this transformation.

For the same, they need their diaspora to come home, bring their skills, experience, and passion back to the land of their ancestors. He added that they want all their citizens to work together in order to seize the opportunities that are coming their way in construction, tourism, agriculture, and sustainability.

PM Terrance Drew further asserted that they have worked tirelessly over the past two years and ensured to continue to make several efforts in order to make St Kitts and Nevis, a sustainable island state.
