PM Terrance Drew attends groundbreaking workshop, discusses challenges in energy sector

Basseterre, St Kitts and Nevis: Prime Minister of St Kitts and Nevis, Dr Terrance Drew attended the groundbreaking three-day workshop conducted in the island nation. The primary objective of the workshop was to discuss the measures in order to face all the obstacles faced by the Caribbean islands in the energy sector. 

The workshop is conducted from 12th to 14th March at the Marriott Resort Frigate Bay. This was held under the theme “Right-sizing Electricity Regulations in Small Island States within the Caribbean: How far, how fast?”.

The workshop aimed to address all the challenges being faced by small island states in the Caribbean and to find out the solutions to the problems including, Energy Security, Outdated Infrastructure, Limited access to resources and Deteriorating Grid systems.

Notably, the workshop was held as a collaborative effort between the government of St Kitts and Nevis, the Organization of Caribbean Utility Regulators and the Caribbean Centre for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency.

Moreover, organizations such as the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) and the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) of the United Kingdom extended financial contributions for conducting the workshop. It also received technical support from the Fair-Trading Commission in Barbados and the Office of Utilities Regulation in Jamaica.

PM Drew shared his vision of establishing St Kitts and Nevis, a sustainable island nation. He aims to create an energy-efficient and resilient future for the people of the island nation. It will create multiple job opportunities, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and will also play a pivotal role in mitigating climate change.

The leader of the nation has been continuously making efforts to build St Kitts and Nevis as a climate-resilient nation. For the same, he has been hosting several meetings and discussions in order to address the global climate crisis and advance renewable energy in island nations.

It was also mentioned by PM Terrance Drew that there is a crucial need to deal with the problems being faced by the Caribbean nations, if they continue to ignore these hurdles then there is a distinct possibility that small island nations will find themselves in dire straits in the near future.
