Roseau, Dominica: Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit visited the ongoing construction project sites in the Soufriere Constituency on Wednesday. With other officials, he examined the progress of the construction sites.
The Dominican government will be constructing 16 individual homes at Savanne in Scottshead. The contract for this project will be handed over to at least 16 local contractors, and construction is likely to commence by early this year.
A slipway or boat ramp is also planned to be constructed at Scottshead to allow fisherfolk to move their vessels to and from shore for repairing and storage during severe weather. This will eventually ease the difficulties of the Dominican fishers.
Other ongoing projects going on in Scottshead:
- A 50 meters concrete wall, 10ft tall, will be reinstated along the Soufriere and Scottshead Seawall, which got damaged during the passage of Hurricane Maria 2017. The project includes 60 meters of the backed concrete roadway and 60 meters of rock revetment to protect the wall along the shoreline.
- A community centre, which will double as a hurricane shelter, is on the cards for Gallion.
- In Pointe Michel, local contractors will take the lead on the construction of 16 individual homes in Union Estate, near Poree, for the residents who were displaced by Hurricane Maria 2017.
Moreover, the Soufriere Health and Wellness Center is among the complete projects, which the Dominican government will officially open early this year.
During his visit to Soufriere Constituency, PM Skerrit also met and conversed with the residents.
In addition, numerous other projects are going on in the other constituencies. Last year on December 23, 2021, PM Skerrit, along with other Cabinet members, handed over keys of 12 climate-resilient homes to the beneficiaries. These homes were handed over to the Dominican citizens who lost their homes by the passage of Hurricane Maria 2017.
Dominican government pledged to make the island the worlds’ first climate-resilient country.
