PM Holness mourns death of Alan Magnus, a veteran Jamaican broadcaster

Kingston, Jamaica: Prime Minister Andrew Holness mourned the death of Alan Magnus, a well-known Jamaican broadcaster and renowned Media Personality. He died on Saturday morning at his residence in Hope Pastures at the age of 80. 

PM Holness recalled the moments when he used to wake up in the morning with his voice. Magnus’s voice will always be remembered in the hearts of the people of the Federation. 

“I am deeply saddened by the passing of veteran Jamaican broadcaster Alan Magnus, an icon of morning radio, a voice that resonated through the hearts of Jamaicans for decades. As a child, his voice woke me up in the mornings, accompanying me on the journey to school”, stated the leader of Jamaica. 

Further, he extended his heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and countless listeners. His legacy, both as a broadcaster and a recording artist with the song “Flying Machine”, will continue to resound in the hearts of the people. 

Moreover, the Minister of Culture, Gender, Entertainment and Sports, Olivia Grange, expressed grief at the passing of a popular morning radio broadcaster. She stated, “He left us accompanied by the love and fondness that a nation reserved only for an extra special citizen, which is precisely what Alan Magnus was.”

Alan Magnus was a proud alumnus of Kingston College and was a famous name in the media field. His legacy has had a significant impact on entertainment and culture. He has given 46 years, i.e., more than half of his life, to the media industry.

He has started his journey in broadcasting as an engineer at a telephone company. He had always been actively interested in the media, which led him to switch careers.  

Notably, Magnus had joined Jamaicans in their homes, entertained them, informed them, and educated them with his charm, wit, and humour in a style that was uniquely his own. 

People’s love for him encouraged him to continue his work even after his official retirement from RJR in 2017. Veteran Magnus loved to talk and sing, due to which he recorded artists with his most popular songs, such as Flying Machine and Beautiful Sunday. 

Unfortunately, he lost his wife, Karlene ‘Kerry’ Magnus, in 2019. His legacy and contribution to the media industry and to Jamaica will always be cherished and remembered. 

Additionally, people across the nation took to their Facebook handles to express their grief and sorrow for Alan Magnus’s passing.

While reacting to the news, a person named Mica Nikita wrote, “I can still hear his voice while I’m getting ready for school. Rest in Peace Mr. Magnus! Thanks for having been a part of our lives.”

Another FB user by the name of Rose Singh commented, “Rip Sir Enjoyed your soothing voice throughout the years. The angels are going to enjoy your smile and soothing voice.”
