Europe: Elena Kountoura – Member of the European Parliament, recently shared the EU Statics related to the region’s population at risk of poverty or social exclusion. According to the data shared by Kountoura, as of 2021, 95.4 million people in the EU were at risk of social exclusion or poverty.

The data for 2021 has witnessed a slight growth compared to 2020, which was 94.8 million, 21.6 percent of the population.

MEP Kountoura retweeted the tweet by Eurostat on Wednesday, which showed that the nations with the highest sharing are – Romania (34 percent), Bulgaria (32 percent) and both Greece and Spain (28 percent). On the other hand, countries with the lowest share are – Czechia (11 percent), Slovenia (13 percent) and Finland (14 percent).

“In 2021, 95.4 million people (21.7% of the population) were at risk of social exclusion or poverty. A slight increase from 2020 (94.8 million; 21.6% of the population),” another tweet retweeted by MEP read.

According to the report by Eurostat, around 5.9 million people out of 95.4 million in the EU have been simultaneously facing the risks of poverty and social exclusion. The detailed data explained that in 2021, 29.3 million lived in a household with low work intensity, 73.7 million people in the EU were at risk of poverty, and 27.0 million were severely materially and socially deprived.
