Latitude of racial abuse is colossal in Australia over social media

Australia: A developed country like Australia, where the source of income entirely depends on immigrants, yet those people have to suffer racial, religion and caste discrimination over the internet as well as in person.

A brown Pakistani Comedian and Journalist, Sami Shah, was threatened for making jokes about Islam in Pakistan, internet trolls were also demoralizing his sense of humour, and Melbourne also slammed his service.

Sami Shah has to be active on social media for sale of tickets for respective shows; hence has to face social abuse, mostly from citizens of Australia. 

Now the question arises that abuse happens with every influencer and social media icon. But, this is not what happened with Sami, it all began when Sami started his ABC radio show which turned out to be a hit, but locals were not happy as Non-Australian is hosting an Australian radio show.

According to the survey, If you are Black, Brown, and from a Minority group in Australia, you are most likely to become a victim of abuse, harassed and encounter hate speech online.

Newspapers like The Conversion, ABC has already published about the dehumanization of people and racist views on social media several times.

Religion Racism

Muslim immigrants also face various abuses in the country over their religion. Muslim immigrant, Mariam Veiszadeh who is a Diversity and Inclusion Consultant, received a tweet in 2015 that says, “You Muslim whore, nobody invited you to Australia; leave before we behead your mother.” 

Mariam Veiszadeh stated, “politics normalized the phobia against different religions.”

Social media platforms are integrated into millennial’s life and dissecting the groups of people rather than connecting them. Discrimination over race, religion, gender and caste is not new in Australia. However, there are stringent laws against unfairness and injustice in the country, but the mentality of people will take more years to inculcate equality.

Measures to Protect Minority

Julie Inman Grant, an eSafety Commissioner, is working for the safety of people over social media platform. 

She is protecting the minority groups in Australia from all bullying and social abuse—2021 Online Safety Bill to accountable for the protection of the safety of people on social platforms. It will down the bullying account, and if the account’s holder neglected the request, then it is anticipated to pay a fine of 555,000 Australian dollars. 

Measures like these have the potential to restrict bullying, but the eradication of bigotry will only be achieved by enhancing mentalities.
