Haiti elections again postponed as PM Henry dissolves CEP members

Haiti: The elections in Haiti that were scheduled for the upcoming months have been again postponed for the fourth time following the Monday dissolution of members of the electoral administration (CEP).

This dismissal has dived the island country into further uncertainty. The electoral administration was criticised by the people since the CEP – Provisional Electoral Council was appointed by the late President Jovenel Moise in the year 2020.

The Prime Minister – Ariel Henry, issued a decree on Monday announcing the CEP members had been dismissed and he is preparing to appoint a new council but did not set a deadline for doing so.

After forming several electoral calendars, the CEP set the first round of voting in presidential and legislative elections, as well as for a constitutional referendum, for November 7. The second round of voting was scheduled for – January 23, 2022, in association with municipal and local elections.

In addition, recently, Haitian migrants have been repatriated by the United States government. This mass deportation came after tens of thousands of migrants, mostly Haitian, gathered under a bridge at the Mexico-Texas border, hoping to be granted entry to the United States after the 7.2 magnitudes of earthquake destroyed their everything.

Besides this, the island is also battling with various issues such as – political instability, gang violence, poverty, higher crime rate and COVID-19 outbreak.

In the month of July, the most impoverished nation of the Caribbean region lost its President, Jovenel Moise. President was assassinated on July 7, 2021, at his own residence, in which incident the wife of President – Martine Moise was also injured in the attack.

This incident led to more political chaos in the nation. Earlier, the elections were postponed in Haiti amid the surge in COVID-19 infections.

The earthquake that struck Haiti on August 14 destroyed more than 53,000 buildings, including schools, homes, churches, and other infrastructure.
