Guyana welcomes over 8 lakh passengers, aims to cross 1 million by November 2024

Guyana witnessed a remarkable boost in its tourism sector, as the island nation welcomed over 801,000 passengers in the first-nine months of 2024. With such significant growth in the tourism sector, the authorities are aiming to take several initiatives with a vision to surpass the figures by 1 million by November 2024.

This information was unveiled by Ramesh Ghir, the Chief executive officer of the Cheddi Jagan International Airport. While shedding light on the data, he stated that the tourism industry has been registering remarkable growth in the arrival of visitors which is not only elevating the tourism sector but also the economic conditions of the country.

He mentioned that the nation has recorded a remarkable surge of 18% in the arrival of passengers year-over-year, with an additional 125,000 passengers as compared to the same period in 2023.

For this growth, CEO Ghir has credited the initiatives undertaken by the government of Guyana to position the country as the premier destination for travellers.

He also outlined the increased and enhanced airline connectivity, offering more than 20,000 additional seats and stated that these services have also played a key role in attracting a large number of passengers.

CEO Ghir asserted that the new additional routes to Guyana have not only welcomed visitors but have also enhanced connectivity by offering seamless and easy travel options to all the passengers, making their visit to the nation unforgettable.

He added that such deepened and enhanced relations have also played a huge role in attracting large number of passengers to the country. He stated that they are adamant to continue to offer a vibrant environment to all the visitors, giving them an opportunity to explore the natural beauty, rich cultural heritage and many more.

Moreover, the CEO has also given credit to Caribbean Premier League and Cricket Carnival for this tourism growth. He added that these events have also contributed significantly to the enhancement in the arrival of tourists.

Notably, Guyana has hosted 7 league matches in CPL 2024 including both the Qualifiers, Eliminator and the Finals. These hosting of the matches at Providence Stadium has also brought large number of tourists to the country, marking a humongous growth in the arrival of visitors.

The CEO Ramesh Ghir also appreciated the President, Irfaan Ali and stated that he has been instrumental in improving the tourism sector. He added that it is the unwavering efforts and dedication of the President towards marketing Guyana which has resulted successfully in negotiations for additional carriers to enter the market soon.

Also, President Irfaan Ali has announced to host the CPL Final 2025 in Guyana which shed light on the commitment of the authorities to make the country, a resilient and sustainable tourism nation.
