Guyana: President of the Republic of Guyana – Dr Irfaan Ali, met and greeted the cricket enthusiasts of the country last week. Dr Irfaan Ali attended the Cricket Carnival Linden Regatta at Kara Kara, Blue Lake.

The Head of State spoke about the significance of Guyana’s tourism package and the importance of sport in its development. He also interacted with patrons before enjoying some of the regatta’s events, such as boat racing.

Prime Minister, Brigadier (Retd), Mark Phillips, the Minister within the Ministry of Housing and Water, Susan Rodrigues and other Government officials were also at the event. Dr Ali and members of his Cabinet were also a part of ‘Warrior Nation’ on Saturday evening for the pivotal clash against the Trinbago Knight Riders in the Caribbean Premier League.

The 37-run victory at the National Stadium in Providence propelled the Guyana Amazon Warriors into the playoff, which starts on Tuesday. The third consecutive win for the home team also knocked out the Knight Riders from the 2022 edition of the tournament. The Warriors will play top-of-the-table Barbados Royals this evening in their final clash before the next round. A win would keep them in second (II) place, and a loss will push them to third.

Dr Irfaan Ali also cheered on the Guyana Amazon Warriors in their clash against the St Lucia Kings at the National Stadium in Providence. The Head of State, who waved the Golden Arrow Head while rousing the batters and bowlers from the Red Stand, also took time out to interact with cricket fans. During an interview at the game, he spoke of the importance of cricket to all Guyanese, about unity and togetherness, which the concept of ‘One Guyana’ represents and the importance of sport in the country’s transformation.
