Guyana: The Minister of Health, Honourable Dr Frank Anthony, attended the PAN Caribbean Partnership against HIV/AIDS (PANCAP) Certificate Award Ceremony held at the Grand Coastal Hotel on the East Coast of Demerara.
The ceremony was held for healthcare providers and public health practitioners who completed two regional cohorts’ courses in either supervision and Management in the Health sector; or Policy Development and Advocacy for Global Health Committee from the University of Washington.
The two regional cohort courses were conducted online over three months and are part of a capacity-building initiative funded by USAID. Sixty-four participants from across the Caribbean became certified, allowing them to contribute better to the Caribbean’s developing health sector.
During his brief remarks, Minister Anthony congratulated the attendees and expressed gratitude to PANCAP, USAID, and the University of Washington for their assistance in organising the programme.
In his address, he reminded the audience of the key role they play in delivering services to the people of Guyana. He further reiterated the Ministry’s commitment to partner with external partners to provide training opportunities for healthcare workers within the public health sector.
In closing, Dr Anthony urged participants who are currently employed by the Ministry of Health to utilise and implement the strategies discussed during the courses, which will aid in the transformation of their respective departments and have an overall benefit to the health sector.
“We can only change and transform the Ministry if all of you take on your role and practice things you learn. Many of you are in positions where you can use this, put it into effect, and see something happen, see an impact, and that’s what I urge all of you to do”, he said.
Also in attendance at this ceremony were Chief Medical Officer Dr Narine Singh; Regional Health Officer (RHO) of Region Four, Dr Gavinash Persaud; Deputy Director of Regional Health Services, Dr Veronica Griffith and Knowledge Coordinator at PANCAP, Dr Shantie Singh.
