Guyana: Labour Ministry lauds women for becoming hard skill experts

Georgetown, Guyana: The Ministry of Labour of the Republic of Guyana has recently shared an inspiring story of a woman who has worked hard to become hard skill experts through the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).

The recently update by the ministry, “A woman will feel at her best with her hard-earned money in her purse, a feeling that motivates women to pursue personal goals and such empowerment is backed by the Government of Guyana by pushing the country’s women and girls to become hard skill experts through the Board of Industrial Training (BIT).”

As per the update, the thought may come to many of the young girls and women that there is no place for them to earn in male-dominated jobs. Many may tell themselves; they don’t have what it takes; how can the skill be acquired? Let’s not forget the strain of family life that consumes wives, mothers and even grandmothers, who are often caregivers for their grandchildren.

“To our women and young girls, your first step to learning a hard skill or technical trade through the Board of Industrial Training will bring changes, specifically, economic growth with exposure to lucrative opportunities within the Oil and Gas Sector,” the post by the ministry read.

Furthermore, it stated that recent studies done by the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO) stated women made up around 37 per cent of workers in the sector, a statistic based on a relatively small number of countries which report complete industrial employment data by gender.

In addition to this, it outlined that locally, the initiative to support women to pursue technical skills training is heavily endorsed by Dr Mohamed Irfaan Ali, President of the Co-operative Republic of Guyana. It is time our women secure positions in the industrial sector; nothing is stopping you.
