Guyana: Dr. Irfaan Ali addresses the Nation on Venezuela’s Dispute

Guyana: President of the Co-operative Republic Guyana and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, Dr. Irfaan Ali, Address to the Nation on the Government of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

He is not anticipated speaking to citizens in a national broadcast so soon. But a troubling event has happened concerning our provincial uprightness that requires that he speak to their citizens directly, in full transparency, and to keep people fully informed.

He declared, “As we all are well informed, Guyana has managed an Embassy in Venezuela attributed to the Government. Correspondingly, we have extended to welcome a Venezuelan Embassy in Guyana commissioned to our Government.”

In other words, Guyana has devotedly kept all endorsed channels of conversation open to the Government of Venezuela. The Government attempted to request the UN Secretary-General to refer to the International Court of Justice (the ICJ) the long-standing dispute with Venezuela over the 1899 arbitral award.

On January 7th, Mr. Nicolas Maduro, President of Venezuela, complained, petitioning for Venezuela supremacy and independent sovereign rights in the waters and seabed alongside Guyana’s coast, west of the Essequibo River.

Violations are :
The first violation is that no State can independently restrict its international boundaries, whether they are land borders or maritime terminals. The second violation “the land dominates the sea,” which means that supremacy, and sovereign rights in the sea and seabed, originate from title to the land that produces the coast to which those seas and seabed are contiguous.

President stated that, “Guyana is confident that the Court will determine this dispute in its favor, and that this will necessarily also conclude the issue of maritime rights in the neighboring sea and seabed. He also urges Venezuela’s Government to reconsider this dispute for a peaceful solution.

Even he alerted the International Community, including our sister-states in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) and the Americas, of the danger to international peace and defense that is being terrorized by last Thursday’s Venezuela proclamation, which infringes elementary principles of international law.
