Guyana Amazon Warriors secure top spot with victory over Saint Lucia Kings

Guyana Amazon Warriors climbed up to the top position at the points table of the Caribbean Premier League 2024 with their exceptional victory against Saint Lucia Kings. The match was played at the National Providence Stadium of Guyana, defeating the Kings by 35 runs.

The match began with Guyana Amazon Warriors winning the toss and deciding to bat first. The openers of the team, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Azam Khan set the tone, scoring 26 runs each.

Following their departure, the duo, Shai Hope and Shimron Hetmyer turned the heat on with bat, both scoring half-centuries with 56 and 58 runs in just 31 and 30 balls respectively. After that, Romario Shepherd made a quickfire 24 runs to propel his side over the line and setting up a target of 208 runs for the Kings.

Saint Lucia Kings started off well but soon enough, their opener and star batsman Johnson Charles was dismissed in just 12 runs. Faf du Plessis also struggled in the first couple of overs but chanced his arm and went into overdrive mode for a bit. He carried on till the end and tried to finish off the game, but did not receive any support from the other end. Therefore, he failed to finish the game in style, remaining unbeaten on 92 off just 59 deliveries.

The bowling section for the Guyana Amazon Warriors remained excellent throughout the innings. Gudakesh Motie began the stride by taking three early wickets but Moeen Ali got rid of Ackeem Auguste in the final over of the Powerplay which opened the floodgates a bit.

After that, it was Imran Tahir’s show as the captain picked up two wickets and took some crucial catches to get his side on the top of the points table.

The Captain of Guyana Amazon Warriors, Imran Tahir extended gratitude to the crowd for their incredible support. He stated that the surface has been different this season but they have had the luxury of 3-4 spinners, having different abilities which made their job easier.

He further mentioned about their next game and stated that they won’t take any match for granted. Notably, the Warriors will take on Trinbago Knight Riders on Sunday night at the National Stadium, Providence.

Moreover, Shimron Hetmyer who was awarded the Player of the Match stated that he is just trying to enjoy each game and contribute to the team’s victory.
