Governor-General of Barbados tests positive for COVID-19

Barbados: Governor-General Dame Sandra Mason has gone into quarantine after being exposed to COVID-19.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced the previous evening’s coronavirus update and press conference.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley announced, “It is with regret that I have to say to the country that Her Excellency has gone under self-quarantine. There was a member of the household staff at Government House who would have confirmed positive for coronavirus.”

“The good news is that on the first test, she tested negative, but we’ve had to move everyone out of Government House to provide for the in-depth sanitizing that has to take place,” she further revealed, noting that extensive contact tracing had been administered.

Ms. Mia Amor Mottley added that Her Excellency and her family would remain in quarantine while anticipating the second test results.

The Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley also announced that Chief Justice Sir Patterson Cheltenham was also self-quarantining as regard, “largely due to someone intimate to someone who works with him displaying symptoms, and anticipating the results of the tests to determine what is the best course of action.”

She stated that Sir Patterson’s situation did not need him to be tested, noting that public health officials had acknowledged that self-quarantine was all that was required at this stage.

Urging Barbadians to join her in praying for Dame Sandra and Sir Patterson, Prime Minister Mottley emphasized the need for persons to adhere to coronavirus protocols set out by the Ministry of Health and Wellness.

Prime Minister Mia Amor Mottley also encouraged the country that Government settled committed to doing all that was inevitable to protect everyone.

There was one death from coronavirus on Wednesday, February 3. The 62-year-old Barbadian man died while an inmate at the Harrison Point Isolation Facility. The death toll from coronavirus as of Wednesday stood at 15.

On that day, 30 persons were recognized with COVID-19, out of the 485 tests administered by the Best-dos Santos Public Health Laboratory. There were 36 recoveries, bringing the number of active cases to 352.

The 30 new positives comprise ten women and 20 men. Seven of them were sent to Harrison Point previously for assessment. Persons are sent to Harrison Point for inspection to confirm whether their PCR test result is a new case or an old case. Of the 23 other issues, 22 are Barbadians.
