Flash Flood Warning has been discontinued in north western, western and northern districts of Barbados as a trough system is passing through an island which is causing moderate to heavy rains.

As per the radar and satellite has shared the images which indicated that the trough system has moved to north west and currently it is not affecting the island.

“A trough system is affecting the island, and rainfall between 1 to 2 inches is likely to occur, with moderate to heavy falls over the north western, western and northern districts.”, the BMS noted.

Initially, Barbados Meteorological Services (BMS) cautioned people and warn them that this advisory could exceed to ‘Red Alert’ at a short notice.

Due to such conditions, residents were asked to expect possible moderate to significant soil erosion especially on bare or damaged land surfaces. The heavy showers could result in water logging on roads and on fields as well.

Noting this, this has caused traffic delays and the people experienced disturbance during their travelling in and out of the city. Waterlogging was expected to turned out moderately aggressive due to the excess water on roads, fields. Water canals, storm drains and property.

According to BMS, “A flash-flood watch is issued when heavy or excessive rainfall in a short period (generally less than 6 hours) could result in flash flooding in the watch area. It does not mean flooding will occur, but it is possible.”

It is to be noted that whether the conditions are normal and are not affecting the nation but people are still expected to practice following measures for next few days.

  • Water settlement on roads and fields which may lead to commuting delays and possible isolated diversions in and out of city
  • Soil erosion on bared or scarred land surfaces
  • Residents and visitors should also be aware that this alert could elevate to red (warning) at short notice
  • Marginally invasive excess water on roads, fields, storm drains/ water canals and on property

Additionally, BMS ensures people to issue advisory if such conditions again fall in the country.
