Haiti: The provisional Government of Haiti on Wednesday has drafted a new Constitution to which the country will try to overcome from the political instability arisen after the assassination of President Jovenel Moise.
Prime Minister Ariel Henry cited, “A new constitution will be a point of departure for the other agreements on the future of our nation.” With this, PM defended the general elections, which were postponed till the month of November.
This new charter will extend the powers of the President at the chance of Parliament. It would suppress the prime minister’s office and create a vice presidency instead, which will be filed concurrently with the presidential elections to avoid continuous debates before policies can be carried out.
The ones who have defended the new constitution stated that it excludes legal Immunity for the government officials after leaving the office so that they can be tried in regular courts rather than first going through a Senatorial approval.
Mona Jean, one of the lawyers who sit on the committee that drafted the new constitution, stated that “Immunity is not synonymous with impunity. A government’s job must not be a source of illicit enrichment.”
Prime Minister did not clarify that how the new constitution should be voted on.
Since the year 1805, Haiti has identified 23 Constitutions, as all leaders, with a few exceptions, have systematically wanted to be in power in one way or the other, referendums being usually some farce where a small section of the population would vote to validate somebody’s project.
The presidential elections in Haiti have been postponed till the month of November. Besides the political instability and chaos, the island country is dealing with gang violence, murders, and now the consequences of the 7.2 magnitudes of the earthquake.
The earthquake has destroyed more than 53,000 buildings, including schools, houses, churches and other infrastructure. Various international/national organisations, countries came forward as a helping hand to the Caribbean island country.
