Dominica to have another development phase with construction of housing lots in Jimmit

Roseau, Dominica: Melissa Skerrit, the Minister of Housing and Urban Development has announced the commencement of another development phase at Jimmit Phase 7, which is set to begin very soon.

Under this phase of development, housing lots ranging between 6,000 sq. ft and 10,000 sq. ft will be constructed. The contract for the commencement of preparatory and infrastructural works has been given to the Caribbean Concrete Ltd.

“The dream of your own home is not out of reach,” mentioned the Housing Minister.

With this statement, she invited the public to apply to become homeowners. These houses are to be constructed under the Housing Recovery Project which was launched by the Government of Dominica in collaboration with the World Bank to build resilience by providing safe houses across Dominica.

In 2017, Hurricane Maria hit the country so badly, causing the destruction of 90% of the housing sector. Due to which, over 4500 houses were completely destroyed and more than 20,000 houses were damaged. 

Under the housing recovery project, the government has constructed and distributed over 1500 houses till date. The construction works for these houses is still ongoing in certain areas which include Jeo Burton, Scotts Head, Eggleston, Grand Bay Villa, Canefield, Vielle Cast and Paix Bouche.

In December 2023, the government handed over the keys of climate-resilient houses to 73 families as a Christmas gift. Even in October 2023, more than 18 homes were handed over to the people of Kalinago Territory.

Furthermore, the announcement for the distribution of 40 homes has been done by the housing Minister, Melissa Skerrit which is projected to be completed by March 2024. This has enhanced the infrastructural growth of Dominica leading towards the overall growth and development.

The actions being taken by the government of Dominica are leading the country towards the path of becoming a climate-resilient nation. The government has pledged to become the world’s first climate-resilient nation by 2030.

Considerably, the another development in the Jimmit area has been widely appreciated by the public, with citizens expressing gratitude, stating, “ That’s wonderful, I would like to say thanks to our leaders in Dominica for making it possible for the people to become home owners.”
