Dominica: Jimmit Regional Emergency Shelter to be handed over in coming weeks

Roseau: A lot of projects are currently ongoing in Dominica by the Prime Minister Dr Roosevelt Skerrit led-administration. One such project from the list, is the Jimmit Regional Emergency Shelter, whose construction has been completed and is all set to be – handed over to the beneficiaries within the forthcoming weeks.

This emergency shelter can keep at least 500 people at a time and will serve the communities of Tarreau, Mahaut, Jimmit, Warner, Campbell, Massacre, Les Pointe, Canefield, Roget and Fond Cole. The Regional Emergency Shelter is funded by the European Union and the Government of Dominica, worth EC$18 million. 

PM Skerrit informed the general public about the completion of the project and tweeted, “#PROJECTUPDATE The Jimmit Regional Emergency Shelter is complete and will be handed over within weeks“.   

Meanwhile, previous week, the British High Commissioner To Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean H.E Scott Furssedonn-Wood visited Dominica, along with his team, during which he examined the project sites in the Kalinago Territory and Portsmouth while exploring new collaboration areas. He furthermore discussed numerous significant areas of interest with the Dominican prime minister, such as – climate change.   

Besides this, the construction of the Soufriere Health and Wellness Center is also finished and is all set to get officially inaugurated by this year only. During his visits to various ongoing construction sites, the prime minister announced that the Dominican government will construct 16 individual homes at Savanne in Scottshead. 

A slipway/ boat ramp is being constructed at Scottshead, which will help the fisherfolk to move their boats to and from shore for repair & storage during severe weather. Fifty meters of a concrete wall, 10ft tall, will be reinstated along the Soufriere/Scottshead Seawall, damaged during the passage of Hurricane Maria.

Construction of the international airport and climate-resilient homes are also on the list of projects initiated by the government, under the leadership of PM Skerrit. The administration has pledged to make Dominica a better place to live for its citizens and make it the first-ever climate-resilient country in the globe.
