COVID-19: Trinidad and Tobago reports additional 399 positive cases, 4 deaths

Trinidad and Tobago: Despite the implementation of strict restrictions in the country, Trinidad and Tobago is now witnessing community spread as on Wednesday, the Ministry of Health reported additional 399 positive cases and 4 deaths related to the COVID-19 pandemic.

There is a total of 3,024 active cases of COVID-19 in the country, marking up as one of the most affected countries in the whole Caribbean region. Trinidad and Tobago has so far reported about 189 deaths, and a total of 276 patients are in the hospitals under medical supervision. There are 2,307 persons in home self-isolation.

A few days ago government led by Dr Keith Rowley had announced more strict guidelines which outlined the closure of all restaurants, bars, sports complex and non-essential shop in the country to curb the menace. The measures have been put on, but effects are not visible as cases are being identified regularly.

After receiving about 40,000 jabs of Oxford Astra-Zeneca vaccines from India, Trinidad and Tobago initiated its vaccination campaign and additionally government received 33,600 vaccines from the COVAX facility. Total 55,259 persons have been inoculated with the first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, and only 288 persons have received a second dose of the same.

The opposition United National Congress is harshly criticising the government for the handling of COVID-19. UNC’s political leader, Kamla Persad Bissessar, has had already announced to take over the management of Trinidad and Tobago, terming that the government has failed to handle the situation.

Outlining the plans to tackle the global pandemic in the country, Kamla introduced a recovery and growth plan post-COVID-19 in five Economic Booster Shots. She announced to reduce the tax burden on the people, suggested a jumpstart food security, restart a reformed oil refinery to regain fuel security, invest in renewable energy and the creation of 3 innovative funds to mobilise financial resources.
