Prime Minister Andrew Holness wrote, “Award-winning icon Cicely Tyson, who distinguished herself in film, theater and television, died today at the age of 96.
Her inspiring acting career lasted decades and was marked by many groundbreaking moments, including outstanding performances in “Roots,” “King: The Martin Luther King Story,” and “Trip to Bountiful.”
Cicely Tyson is a household name, and her roles resonated with people all over the world. I send heartfelt condolences to her loved ones and fans.”
Cicely Tyson was an American actress and fashion model. In a career spanning more than seven decades, she became known for her portrayal of strong African-American women.
According to the New York Times, In a remarkable career of many decades, she refused to take parts that demeaned Black people and won a Tony, Emmys, and an honorary Oscar.
She smashed all the stereotypes created by society. She was a strong African-American woman who fragmented racial conventions in the dramatic arts of the 1970s, driving her to stardom and fame as an example for civil rights; she died on Thursday. She was 96.
A Jamaican resident wrote, “RIP… I’m sure you are going to make beautiful movies on the other side entertaining the angels and other beautiful souls… Your light can never be dimmed, can never out. Keep on the shining, beautiful soul… Sleep, for now, my angel said God… RIP.”
Another Facebook user wrote, “Miss Cicely Tyson was a wonderful blessed, classy, strong black woman and actress; she will be missed greatly; my condolences to her family and co-workers.”
Another resident of Jamaica wrote, “Her role in Madeas family reunion ( the movie) was such an inspiration, she played that role very well. RIP, my dear. I will be watching all your movies from tonight as a tribute.”
