Vice presidents Damion Crawford, Wykeham McNeil, Mikael Phillips and chairman of People’s National Party, Phillip Paulwell, resigned from their authorities. All of them were senior members of the main opposition party of Jamaica.
Recently chose Vice President Mikael Phillips has also decided to withdraw his nomination.
According to the statement by these members, those resigned they said that they had engaged the wider leadership of the party in good faith negotiation to avoid a further widening of the internal crack, recognising that the party leader had declared publicly that the party could not allow another divisive internal election at the time. They decided after realising the risk of another internal election before the wounds of the last presidential elections were not even adequately healed.
The members said that despite all the reasonable efforts to broke a platform of unity, there had been otherwise secret attempts to destroy the goal of peace and harmony with a plan to crowd the available positions in line with previous public statements made by the leader, who pronounced a lack of trust for persons those had not supported him in his campaign leadership and his preference to surround himself with only individuals who overtly supported his candidacy.
The members said that, therefore, to continue their sincere efforts to preserve their beloved party, which had served the nation well and had been at the forefront of much of its development, they had decided to resign from their current positions and turn their efforts towards rebuilding the constituency organisations. The most recent Achilles heel of the PNP had been the disunity that has troubled the party, which according to the members, had been deepened since the most recent internal election, where the victor had seemingly NOT acknowledged that unity has the responsibility of the victorious ultimately. They further believe that the disunity and display of underhandedness had crippled the spirit and effectiveness of the Unity Committee.
